Winter Outlook Predictions Released: Here's What Forecasters Expect
With the Labor Day weekend marking the unofficial end of summer, forecasters are starting to look ahead and predict what's in store for the winter of 2025. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says heavy precipitation is expected in the areas shown in the darkest shade of green in the first image above. Areas shown in light green are "leaning above average" in terms of snowfall. NOAA predicts temperatures should also lean above average. (See the second image above.) Here's When To Watch First Total Lunar Eclipse In Two Years
In a potentially special event -- if viewing conditions cooperate -- the “Super Flower Blood Moon,” the first eclipse of the decade, will bring the moon closest to the Earth that it's been in at least two years. On Wednesday, May 26, the lunar eclipse will begin at 7:11 a.m. Eastern time and end at 7:26 a.m., but will be partially visible from 5:45 a.m. to 8:52 a.m. along the East Coast. According to NASA, over several hours, the Moon will pass through Earth's shadow, causing it to darken and usually become reddish in color. The full moon is called the "flower" moon in May because it's w…

While the El Niño climate pattern often influences the winter, neutral conditions are in place for this winter and expected to persist into the spring. “Without either El Niño or La Niña conditions, short-term climate patterns like the Arctic Oscillation wi…

Three Long-Range Forecasts Call For Stormy Winter: Here's When First Snowfall Is Most Likely
With three separate long-range forecasts calling for a snowy and stormy winter in the area, the National Weather Service released a map showing the likely first day of snowfall for locations across the country. For most of the region, it's between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30. (See the map above.) The earliest accumulating snowfall recorded in New York City happened on Oct. 21, 1952. Now, to those long-range forecasts: The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts a "wet and wild" 2019-20 winter in the Northeast marked by "shivers, snowflakes ... and strong storms" with the "snow-verload" affecting mainl…
