Fire Chief In Fairfield County Dies After Returning From Call
A longtime Fairfield County fire chief has died after responding to a fire call.
Sandy Hook Fire Chief William "Bill" Halstead, age 72, a lifelong Newtown resident, who has served the department as chief for 44 years, died on Friday, July 8, after responding to a call, according to Sandy Hook Volunteer fire department officials.
"Despite the efforts of SHVFR personnel, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Newtown Police Department officers, the Newtown paramedic, and the Newtown Emergency Communications Center team, Chief Halstead passed shortly after the incident," the department said. …
Fairfield County Man Charged With Sexual Assault, Police Say
Following a months-long investigation, a Fairfield County man has been arrested for an alleged sexual assault.
Shawn Santoro, age 33, of Trumbull, was arrested on Friday, Jan. 14 by the Newtown Police and charged with one count of sexual assault.
According to police, the arrest was the culmination of a several month-long investigation by the Newtown Police Department's Patrol Division, and Detective Bureau, into a reported sexual assault, the department said.
Santoro was released on a $100,000 surety bond.
Two Busted For Reporting Truck Theft And Allegedly Torching Vehicle, Monroe Police Say
Two men were arrested on arson charges following an investigation into an event that took place in October regarding the theft of a vehicle.
Matthew Bittner, 38, of Monroe, and Joseph Bogdanyi, 32, Seymour, were arrested Monday, Dec. 23, by Monroe Police following an investigation into the reported theft and arson of a vehicle.
According to Monroe Police, on Oct. 23, the department received a report of a vehicle on fire in the driveway of 35 Corporate Drive in Monroe.

Woman Arrested Twice In One Day In Fairfield County, Police Say
A 23-year-old woman was arrested twice in one day for the same crime in Fairfield County.
Elayna Smith, of Brookfield, was arrested on Saturday, Sept. 28, during a traffic stop when police learned that she was a passenger in a car with whom she had a protective order, said Newtown Police Lt. Aaron Bahamonde.
According to police, Smith attempted to give police a fake name when first questioned, but her identity was quickly discovered, as well as the no-contact order, Bahamonde said.
She was arrested and charged with interfering with an investigation and violation of a protective order.…
Man Masturbates In Shopping Plaza At Least Twice, Newtown Police Say
A Bethel man has been arrested for allegedly masturbating with his penis exposed while sitting in his vehicle in a shopping plaza, not once, but at least twice, Newtown Police said.
Newtown received the reported of the masturbating man last week while in his vehicle at the Sand Hill Shopping Plaza, said Newtown Police Lt. Aaron Bahamonde.
Police began an investigation and conducted surveillance in the plaza parking lot using a female officer as a decoy.
