WESTON, Conn. Weston High boys lacrosse hadnt beat Staples in five years, so Thursday's 8-5 win over the Wreckers in light but steady rain was the high point of the Trojans season thus far.
Its a huge win over a big school that gives us confidence moving forward, said Trojans third-year coach John Mathews. Its a win we can build off.
The victory ups Westons record to 6-2 and drops Staples to 3-6.
It looked like it might be easy-going at first as the Trojans scored their first goal 48 seconds into the game and another less than two minutes later.
Weston dominated the first half, leading 6-1 at the break, but Staples came back with the first three goals of the second half to make a game of it. Theyre a good team and it was only a matter of time, Mathews said, but our guys stepped up.
Mathews attributed the victory to a zone defense that perplexed the Wreckers and to seven saves by sophomore goalie Grant Limone.
Senior Jack Scheufele and junior Sean Fumai scored three goals each to lead the scoring attack.
We did a better job on ground balls and took some better shots, Mathews said. Our better players stepped up and made some big plays.
The game wasnt just a rivalry match with Staples but an opportunity to support cancer research. The Trojans wore pink shoes and socks and the clock was stopped 58 seconds before the game started to commemorate the 58 Connecticut residents who are found to have cancer every day. Donations were collected before the game, and Mathews said his team raised money during the week and passed out cards with the name of cancer victims they played for.
Next up for the Trojans is a game at Byram Hills in Armonk, N.Y., Saturday at 1 p.m.
