Swimmers Splash to 5th at Nationals

WILTON, Conn. -- The Wilton Wahoos swim team finished in fifth place overall at the YMCA Long Course Nationals Swimming Championship held at Georgia Tech University. The Wahoos were the top team from Connecticut despite missing their top men swimmers, who are getting ready for the U.S. National Championships in California.

The women led the way, finishing second while the men came in 19th.

Stephen Holmquist set a new Connecticut resident record in the 13/14 boys 400 IM with a time of 4:46.58 (bettering his seed time by 10 seconds) and placing 18th in that event.  The previous record set in 1989 (4:49.17).  He was 15th in the 1500 free by dropping 31 seconds from a 17:25.81 to 16:54.17, and 18th in the 800 free, dropping 10 seconds (8:47.46).  He also broke the Wahoo club records in the 800 free, 1500 free and 400 IM,

The women's 800 free relay team of Maddy Smart, Verity Abel, Caitlin Cole and Katy Luchansky took home gold and set a new record for Connecticut residents with a time of 8:33.48. The previous record was 8:36.49 set in 1988.

The women's 200 free relay of Luchansky, Grace Hendee, Abel and Smart took home silver and set a new Connecticut-resident record with a time of 1:48.32. The previous record was 1:49.96.

Luchansky and teammates Sam DeLiseand Maddie Smart made their first Junior National cuts and will be joining some of their teammates next week at the U.S. Junior National Championship in California. Overall, Luchansky had a great meet, finishing second in the 400 free, third in the 200 free and fourth in both the 100 fly and 100 free. Smart took home a silver in the 100 free. She also placed fifth in the 400 free and sixth in the 50 free. Meg Lattimer swam to sixth place in the 200 breaststroke.

Matt Moen was on the medals platform several times. He finished fourth in the 1500 free, ninth in the 400 IM,11th in the 400 free and 13th in the 800 free.

• Sam DeLise finished 17th in the 200 breaststroke, 20th in the 200 IM and 21st in the 400 IM.

• Shannon Ahearn placed eighth in both the 200 individual medley and 200 breaststroke. She also placed 11th in the 400IM and 27th in the 200 backstroke.

• Morgan Scarth finished ninth in the 1500 free, 17th in the 400 IM and 27th in the 200 breaststroke.

• Verity Abel dropped came in fifth in the 1500 free and 16th in the 200 free.

• Katie Grant placed 12th in the 1500 free and 14th in the 800 free.

• Olivia Clark placed 20th in the 1500 free, 22nd in the 100 breaststroke and 30th in the 200 breaststroke.

• Tim Lattimer finished eighth in the 200 breaststroke, ninth in the 100 breaststroke,13th in the 200 IM and 23rd in the 200 IM.

• Cody Bond finished in 22nd place in the 1500 free and 26th in the 800 free.

• Sophie Hornby placed 22nd in the 500 free and 26th in the 400 IM.

• Jordan Berger came in 22nd in the 200 IM and 23rd in the 100 breaststroke.

• Stephanie Moriarty placed 14th in the 50 backstroke and15th in the 200 backstroke.

• Alyssa Storino came in 18th place in the 50 breaststroke.

• Caitlin Cole placed 19th in the 400 free and 29th in the 200 free.

• Bradley Helt swam to a 24th place finish in the 50 backstroke.

• Alyssa LaFrennierre had a great swim to finish 22nd in the 200 backstroke.

• Bobby Lesko placed 25th in the 50 breaststroke.

• Jazzi Cooper had a couple of nice swims to place 26th in the 200 fly and 29th in the 100 fly.

• Caroline O'Brien swam to a 25th place finish in the 100 fly.

• Grace Hendee placed 24th in the 50 free.

• Sean Higgins finished in 21st place in the 200 fly.

• Jordan Stewart had a strong finish to place 27th in the 200 fly.

The Wahoos also saw great individual performances from Sydney Pahmer, Tommy Kealy, Mace Molina, Andrew Higgins, Sherman Lau, Brandon Cole, Thomas Szilagyi and Maddy Irwin.
