Wildcats To Kick Off New Season

The Aspetuck Wildcats football teams, which include players from Weston, Easton and Redding, kick off the season in a new conference Saturday with games at Wolfe Park in Monroe.

Aspetuck, which is also home to several award-winning cheerleading teams, plays three games Saturday. The sixth-grade team, coached by Jeff Gombos, plays at 9 a.m. The eighth-grade team of coach Don Romaniello kicks off at 1 p.m., and the fourth-graders of coach George Goetz kick off at 5 p.m.

On Sunday, the Wildcats' 79ers (second- and third-grade players) will compete in a jamboree at Perry Hill School in Shelton.

Aspetuck's fifth-grade team, coached by Richard Cremin, opens next week against Monroe. The seventh-grade team of coach Fred Lawrence also plays its opener next week in Monroe.

Aspetuck plays in the Colonial Youth Football Conference with teams from Norwalk, Shelton, Monroe, Newtown and Danbury. It previously played in the Candlewood Valley League. The Wildcats are still a member of American Youth Football national organization.

The Wildcats' cheerleading program includes two teams that won national championships last year. Aspetuck has won eight national titles since 2005.
