Wild Things Live to Play Another Day

While one championship was being decided at North Side Field, two teams were playing for their postseason lives at the Onion Barn in the Weston women's softball league playoffs. The Wild Things and the New Kids on the Block were locked in a back-and-forth struggle that needed extra frames to decide who would be going home.

Two outs from being eliminated, Kim Granite came through for the Wild Things with a two-run home run to tie the game at six and send it into extra innings. The New Kids threatened to end the game in the bottom of the eighth, but a controversial call over what was ruled an illegal swing ended the inning. Both managers argued the call for several minutes before umpires sorted it out. The Wild Things took advantage of the momentum swing, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth. They held off a bases-loaded threat from the New Kids and won 9-7. New Kids on the Block are eliminated from the playoffs.

The Wild Things will take on the 20-30-40 Somethings in the loser's bracket final at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at the Onion Barn. The winner of that game will play Peter's Spirits in the league championship Tuesday.
