WHS Swim Team Wins State Title

It was a night to remember for the Weston High School girls swim and dive team Tuesday as it was crowned Class S champions at a meet held at Southern Connecticut State University.

Led by coaches Tom Grace and Jeff Thompson, the girls squeaked by three-time champs East Catholic of Manchester by a mere seven points.

"This is such an accomplishment for the girls," said Suzanna Bottger, whose daughter, Karen, is a senior and co-captain of the team. "It was the depth of the team that enabled us to score so many points. We had 12 girls that scored, more than any other year."

Karen finished second in the 200-meter freestyle and third in the 500-meter freestyle, finishing both races with personal best times. Other standouts included freshman Katie Johnson (second place, 100-meter freestyle), sophomore Olivia Clark (third place, 100-meter breaststroke), and sophomore Alex Edgar (third place, 50-meter freestyle).

Dacia Gross, Catie Ledwick, Katie Johnson and Karen Bottger blasted the competition in the 200-meter freestyle relay, coming in first with a time of 1:42:82.

State titles were awarded to the girls who placed first, second or third in an individual event, or first or second in a relay.
