Westport's Saugatuck Rowers Masters Win Title At National Regatta

WESTPORT, Conn. – After a two-year hiatus, the Saugatuck Rowing Club masters team is back on top. The Westport-based crew won the national crown in Sarasota, Fla., at the USRowing Masters National Championships.

Saugatuck won 20 gold medals and accumulated 638 points, well ahead of runner-up Potomac with 496. Capital Rowing Club finished third with 467. Saugatuck also had 26 silver medals and nine bronze medals as it won the national crown for the third time in five years. Saugatuck finished 2nd in 2011 and third in 2012.

“It was nice coming back,’’ said Florian Tudor, the head coach of Saugatuck’s masters team. “I’m very pleased with the results. We’re excited and pleased with what we were able to achieve.”

Saugatuck’s women’s team finished first with 371 points and 12 golds and 30 medals. The men’s team finished fifth with three golds and 16 medals.

Eve Green, an 81-year-old breast cancer survivor, won two gold medals as part of crews for Saugatuck. The team sent 45 rowers to the regatta, and competed in 65 events.

“The team showed a lot of dedication from the members,’’ Tudor said. “Their dedication produced the results.”
