Westporter Wins Women's Triathlon

Christina Robeson competes in triathlons throughout the United States. Saturday, she didn't have to venture far to pick up another first place trophy.

Robeson, who recently moved from New Canaan to Westport, captured the women's division of the Fairfield Triathlon. She finished in 1:07:41. Julie Jones of New Canaan finished second in 1:12:39, and Laura Currey of Harwood, Mass., took third.

Robeson trailed Jones coming out of the water during the half-mile swim in Long Island Sound. She took the lead on the 10-mile bike ride and put the hammer down on the 5k run, which she completed in 21:06. Her bike time was eighth-fastest among the woman. She was the third-fastest woman in the 5k.

"It was hot,'' Robeson said. "I definitely ran slower than I usually do. It's hard starting this late in the day."

The race started at 1 p.m., and the near 90-degree heat seemed to have the most impact on the running phase. The swim in the Sound was hard, too. Waves were choppy and slowed down the swimmers.

Jones was the second woman out of the water, and fourth on the bike. She ran 24:01 for the 5k, which was sixth among the women.

There were 454 finishers. Registration closed last month in an event that has become one of the most popular events for Fairfield County fitness enthusiasts. "I think it was a great day,'' said Pascal Butcher, the head coach and co-founder of Fairfield-based TriFitness. "It was windy and I think it affected the current. The biking was good, though, and it was hot on the run. It was a great day." For complete results, click here.
