Westport Trainer Gets Members to Commit to Fit

WESTPORT,Conn.– Allison Galloway, the fitness director at Westport's Saugatuck Rowing Club, works with teen rowers to 70-plus members trying to improve flexibility and physical movement. The Wilton native also supervises the staff at the fitness and rowing facility.

"We’re able to take a person, assess what their goals are and figure out what plan will be," Galloway said. "We sit together, work on a plan and discuss how we can continually change it. You’re not going to find that everywhere.”

Galloway studied exercise science at the University of Connecticutand earned a masters in nutrition from the University of Bridgeport. She is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist. With her knowledge and eight years experience at Saugatuck, she works with the club’s clientele to reap maximum fitness benefits.

Galloway also competed in track and field for Wilton High School, and was a member of the rowing team at UConn. She has run several half marathons and ridden the 100-mile course in the Connecticut Challenge bike event the last two years. She is also a competitive sailor.

Nutrition is one of Galloway's priorities. “Whether it’s weight loss or muscle strength, what you put in your mouth can play a big part in a person’s goal achievement," Galloway said.

The most rewarding part for Galloway is seeing changes, she said. Particularly early in the year, people who've made New Year's resolutions want to see immediate rewards. Galloway promotes patience and commitment as part of the overall strategy.

“Adherence is definitely part of the process. If you can make that personal connection, have a plan, check in and encourage them, it’s helpful," she said. "When people start to see the results, it can make such a difference in their life.”
