Westport Runners Win Hardware at Minute Man Races

WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport was well-represented at the awards ceremony as hometown runners competed Sunday in the Minute Man Races at Compo Beach.

In the women’s 5K, Kellen Smithson won the 15-18 age division, Carol Clark won the 40-49 division and Cornelia Olsen took the 60-69 age group. Other Westport women in the top three in the 5K included Gwyneth Mulliken, third in 15-18; Liz West, second in 40-49; Dee Dee Scanlin, third in 40-49; Barbara Butler, second in 60-69; and Ida Lowe, third in 60-69.

In the men’s 5K, Jackson Daines won the 14-and-under age group, and Julia Robins won the 60-69 age division. Other Westport runners in the top three in their age group included Charlie West, second in 14-and-under; Zakeer Ahmad, third in 14-and-under; Nicholas Burchill, second in 15-18; Darren Alexander, second in 19-29; David Allen, second in 40-49; Joe McCambley, third in 50-59; and George Schott, third in 60-69.

In the 10K, Christiane Lueb of Westport won the 15-18 women’s division. Meridet Oster (30-39) and Libby Schreiber (50-59) also won their age groups. Other women from Westport in the top three included Lisa Fay (second, 40-49) and Terry Bernard (third, 50-59). Kelly Konstanty finished third overall among women.

Andreas Bru won the men’s 15-18 division. Nicholas Avelo (19-29), Blake Benke (30-39) and Robert Israely (70-and-up) won their age groups. Other Westport runners in the top three in their age groups included Eric Ross, who took second in the 40-49 age group.

Westport’s Tom Harding finished third overall in the 10K, which was won by Norwalk’s Noredine Abdelfatah. Complete results are available online.
