Westport Race Winners Come From Near and Far

WESTPORT, Conn. — After last week's record field of 202 finishers in the opening race of the 49th annual Road Runners Summer Series, the number of runners returned to more typical levels Saturday in the second event of the 10-race series.

A total of 156 runners showed up at Longshore Country Club for a 3.1-mile jaunt along the shore. And the male and female winners traveled the least and greatest distance, respectively, to get there.

David Mortner, a former Staples track and cross country runner now competing at the University of Vermont, proved to be the fastest, covering the flat seaside course in 17:11. His former Wrecker teammate, Matt Marriott, now on the team at Duke, finished 16 seconds back, edging Dave Litoff by four seconds.

It wasn't a complete shutout for the Litoff family, however. Dave's daughter, Ashley won the women's division, placing 23rd overall with a time of 20:59. She edged Darien High School senior Meredith Ott by two seconds. Meg Vonnane of Stamford rounded out the top three females in 21:53.

Dave and Ashley Litoff were joined in the race by mother Julie (who just missed winning a prize T-shirt by placing fourth in the women's category in 21:59) and younger brother Zach, 22:37. Dave and Julie were regular winners on the local racing circuit before moving. They now live in Louisville, Colo., just outside of Boulder, and were back to visit relatives. At least part of the family may make a return appearance at Longshore next Saturday as the distance grows to 3.8 miles.

Complete results, as well as a schedule and details on the remaining series races, are posted on the Road Runners website.
