Wynne won the race in 4:11.73 in the race at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston. Randon, a senior at Middlesex School in Massachusetts, finished second in 4:12.89. The race featured some of the top high school runners in the country.
Wynne’s victory came just two days after he won three individual events at the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference track and field championships. Wynne, who committed in December to attend the University of Virginia, won the 1,000, 1,600 and 3,200 at the league championships.
In Saturday’s race, Wynne led from start to finish. But he got pushed by Randon, who charged right behind Wynne’s shoulder about midway through the race. Wynne opened up a small lead before holding off another challenge by Randon with about 100 meters to go. Wynne pulled away over the final 50 meters.
Wynne’s time is the second fastest in the nation this winter, according to the website MileSplit.com. Randon’s time is third in the country.
Randon led Middlesex to the New England Division III cross country championship in the fall. The team finished undefeated, and Randon captured the New England championship. Randon set a course record in his New England victory.
