Westport finished fourth in the tournament and completed the summer with a record of 21-3. It lost to California on Saturday in the U.S. championship game.
Westport trailed 11-6 on Sunday before it rallied to tie the game with five runs in the fifth. Mexico answered with four more in the bottom of the inning. Chad Knight’s three-run home run got Westport within one in the sixth. Harry Azadian walked with two outs to get the tying run on base, but Mexico hung on to get the final out.
With top pitchers Chad Knight and Harry Azadian unavailable due to pitch count limitations, Westport turned to Matt Brown to start the game. Charlie Roof and Alex Reiner followed in relief. Mexico, which scored in every inning, ripped 16 hits and took advantage of five Westport errors.
Knight had three hits and seven RBIs for Westport, while Azadian had two hits and three RBIs. Drew Rogers added two hits and scored three runs.
The game ended the best season in the history of the Westport Little League. Manager Tim Rogers’ squad won the first state and New England championship for the program. It went 3-3 in the World Series.
