Weston's volleyball team pulled off an early surprise in the Class M tournament Tuesday with a 3-0 victory over fifth-seeded Nonnewaug High School. The 12th-seeded Trojans advanced to Friday's quarterfinals against an opponent to be determined.
Senior hitter Christina Welsh sparked the Trojans with 18 kills, 15 digs and eight service points. Lili Clement added 12 kills and 11 digs, while setter Jessica Gersch dished out 33 assists to go with eight points and 13 digs. Sophomore hitter Hannah Ashmore added eight kills, 13 service points and 11 digs.
In Friday's quarterfinals, Weston will face the winner of today's matchup between No. 4 Woodland and No. 13 Tolland. The Trojans also reached the quarterfinals in 2009 before falling to Sacred Heart Academy.
