Weston Swimmers Head to Long Course Championship

WESTON, Conn. — Samantha Kim and Charlotte Proceller, 10-year-old Westonites, are swimming their way to success after qualifying for the Long Course Eastern Zone Team. The girls will represent Connecticut at the Eastern Zone Championship at Penn State University from Wednesday to Saturday.

"Charlotte and Sam have worked hard all year, and their practice and determination has paid off with the opportunity to compete against our region's best swimmers. I'm proud to have coached them throughout the year and know they will represent Weston with grace and speed," said Weston Swimming coach Ryan Loechner.

Charlotte has been on Weston Swimming for two years, with a special focus on shortening her long course times. This is Samantha's second season with the organization, and she's thrilled the championship is in her grandparents' hometown.

This summer, both incoming fifth-graders reached their sought-after zone qualification goals. To make the Long Course Season Zone team, Samantha and Charlotte had to achieve two or more long course qualification times in different events in the past 12 months. Samantha qualified for the 50-meter breaststroke, 100-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter freestyle. Charlotte qualified for the 50-meter butterfly and 50-meter freestyle.

The Zone Championship features top regional swimmers competing in their age levels within Eastern, Central, Southern and Western United States Zones. The Eastern Zone, including Weston's swimmers, is made up of 11 Local Swimming Committees, including Adirondack, Allegheny Mountain, Connecticut, Maryland, Maine, Metropolitan, Middle Atlantic, New England, New Jersey, Niagara, Potomac Valley and Virginia. Each committee fields a team of its best swimmers to compete against other committees within that zone.
