Weston Swimmers End Regular Season With a Win

WESTON, Conn. – Weston High swim coach Tom Grace expected the Trojans to top New Milford in Wednesday’s last regular-season meet. But he did not expect it to be so hard.

The Trojans won, 101-85, to finish 7-3 on the season. Weston held a slim 73-67 lead after New Milford won the 200-freestyle relay. But Weston won the 100 backstroke with Asher Greenberg and the 100 breaststroke with Eli Carter to get some breathing room.

“That was a lot closer than we expected,’’ Grace said. “We were missing a few guys and kind of played around with the lineup. It makes it interesting.”

Weston also competed Tuesday night, falling to Watertown in a nonleague meet. With the missing swimmers and fatigue, Grace was not surprised by the work required to beat a good New Milford team.

“We were exhausted,’’ Grace said. “They wanted to try to swim through it, and they did. But it was a tough meet.”

Weston’s individual winners included diver Dean Rapp and Guido Dire in the 100 free. Weston also won the 200-medley relay with Marty Imber, Garrick Tsui, Eli Carter and Adam Winikoff.

The key, however, was the Trojans’ depth. Even though they did not win a majority of the races, they compiled a lot of seconds and thirds to overtake the Green Wave.

“We put some kids who normally swim in exhibitions in position to score for us,’’ Grace said. “They came through, so that made a big difference.”

Weston will now turn its attention to the postseason. The Trojans compete in the South-West Conference championships next week, and Grace is hoping for a top five finish. The meet that commands the most attention is the Class S championships, which will be held March 13. Weston won the title in 2008 and 2010, and finished second to Sacred Heart in 2009 and 2011.

“Over the next few weeks, we’ll get our stuff squared away and get ready for the last few weeks of the season,’’ Grace said.
