It's unlikely that an undersized and inexperienced Weston High's boys swim team will be able to make a run at a second straight Class S state championship. Still, the Trojans closed the regular season on a winning note Thursday with a resounding 98-78 win over New Milford.
The Trojans won every event to rout the Green Wave and finish the season with a 5-6-1 mark. Weston endured a rebuilding season after winning the Class S title last year. Six members of that team graduated, including four all-state swimmers. This team features just one senior, Spencer Kelley, who won two individual events and swam on two winning relays Thursday. As the team celebrated Senior Night, the phrase floating around the pool was changed to "Spencer Night."
"It's a good way to end the regular season,'' coach Tom Grace said. "There's a difference between an acceptable loss and an unacceptable loss, and I thought in our last meet it was an unacceptable loss. They didn't seem like they were together as a team. That wasn't the case today. They really stepped up as a team."
David Fleming, Jordan Berger, Dean Rapp, Marty Imber, Gabe Imber, Asher Greenberg and Eli Carter also won individual events for the Trojans. They also swept the relays, taking the opening 200-medley relay with Marty Imber, Carter, Berger and Kelley. Marty Imber, Berger, Gabe Imber and Kelley swam on the winning 200-free relay. Adam Winkoff, Fleming, Carter and Gabe Rosen swam on the 400-free relay.
Weston can turn its attention to the postseason, where the Trojans have won Class S titles two of the past three years. The Trojans don't have the depth to repeat this year. But they do have several talented individuals and can combine some strong relays that will contend for South-West Conference and state honors.
"I like where we are now,'' Grace said. "We haven't taken any time off lately, and right now the water feels really heavy to them. That's going to help them in the last 25 meters of a race in the postseason. They're not going to experience any thing that they haven't already felt in training."
