WESTON, Conn. Weston swimmer Shelby Fortin, a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania, qualified to compete in the trials for the U.S. Olympic team.
Fortin qualified at the U.S. Winter Nationals last weekend in Atlanta in the 400 long course meter freestyle. She finished in 4:17:78, nearly two seconds under the qualifying standard for the Olympic trials.
Less than a tenth of 1 percent of all the swimmers in America qualify for that meet, Penn coach Mike Schnur told The Daily Pennsylvanian. So basically you are talking about [very few] kids in America per event get to swim in Olympic trials, so for her, it is a great accomplishment.
Fortin missed the cut in the 200 free. She told the Penn student newspaper that she was happy with her results. I felt good in the water, and its great to know that all the hard training Ive been doing this fall is paying off, Fortin said in an email.
The U.S. swimming trials will be held June 25 to July 2 in Omaha, Neb.
Fortin won three races at the Ivy League championships last winter. She also set Penn records in three individual events and was a member of three Penn relays that set school records.
