Weston Seniors Take Moment to Shine

Weston's senior class of swimmers got an emotional sendoff from their teammates during a ceremony at Tuesday's meet against Joel Barlow High School. Co-captains Lauren Garner and Karen Bottger were joined by Ali Bertan, Paige Goldstein and Georgia Flynn as teammates took turns describing their impacts on the team.

Weston won the meet, 99-81. The seniors joined their teammates for an inspirational premeet routine in the pool. Then, after the diving, the seniors were ushered in by boys wearing swim trunks and bowties and presented to their teammates. There were tears, hugs and more than a few giggles as the girls bonded.

The seniors leave a legacy of success at Weston. During the past three years, the Trojans finished fourth in 2007, third in 2008 and second in 2009 in the Class S state championship meet.

"This group of seniors has been contributing a lot by setting the tone for the underclassmen as to what's expected,'' coach Tom Grace said. "They have an idea of the criteria we expect the girls to meet."

The most important races of the season are still on the horizon for the Weston girls: the league championships, the Class S meet and the State Open. Grace says he feels fortunate that his seniors have set an example for a promising group of underclassmen. Tuesday, the younger swimmers showed their appreciation to their veteran teammates. Their bond is tight, and as the season heads for the finish line, the girls took advantage of their last home meet to salute the seniors who have meant so much.
