Weston Scores Upset; Two Wins From Baseball Title

ELLINGTON, Conn. - “The Mets pitched their first no hitter and Weston’s going to win its first state championship,” Weston High assistant baseball coach Bill Moeder said before the tournament quarter-final game Sunday afternoon.

The Trojans are one step closer to the elusive goal after junior pitcher Charles Ameer fired a two hitter and struck out 11 as Weston nipped 2nd ranked Ellington High School on its home field to advance to the semi-final game Tuesday.

Ellington came into the game with a 19-2 record and had scored more than 10 runs in six games, but Ameer held them to a single run in the first inning, when he gave up three walks and a hit.

“I start off slow, but got in a groove and everything was working,” he said. “The curve ball was good and I was getting ahead of the hitters.”

The Knights loaded the bases in the seventh inning with one out on two walks and an infield single, but Ameer bore down to complete the win with a strike out and a ground out.

“My heart was racing, but I knew if I put the ball in play my defense would get an out,” Ameer said.

Justin Resnick, the Trojans’ second baseman, made the play of the game, fielding the sharp grounder and stepping on the bag for the final out.

“We committed no errors and when you play error free you’ll be alright,” Trojans coach Frank Fedeli said. “He made some play up the middle on the last out.”

Ameer also had the team’s first hit, which led to their first run in a two-run fourth inning that was enough for the win. He hit a sharp single, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on left fielder Max Molinsky’s single.

“The kids are playing well, they’re on a roll and we’ll go with that,” Fideli said. “Ellington’s a great team but we did enough to win.”

Tenth ranked Weston has never won a state title before, but is two wins away now. The Trojans will meet the winner of the Goodwin Tech-Plainville game in the semi-final Tuesday.
