Weston Lacrosse Overpowers Notre Dame

Weston High School’s boys lacrosse coach was happy with the final result after Tuesday's 17-1 rout of winless Notre Dame of Fairfield. As for how the Trojans achieved the victory, that was another matter.

"I wanted the guys to make sure on the goals that we had assists,'' John Mathews said. "We knew we could overpower this team with 1-on-1 moves. That's not what we wanted to do. We wanted to work on our offensive execution. We didn't do a good job of that. Too many of our goals were individual efforts."

Zach Kraft scored five goals and collected two assists for Weston (3-0). Lyle Mitchell had four goals and six assists, and Matt Brabkes scored three goals to go with one assist.

The Trojans dominated from the outset, building a 8-0 lead at halftime. Besides the lack of execution on offense, the Trojans' 21 turnovers also concerned Mathews.

"That's absolutely uncalled for,'' Mathews said. "Their goalie played well and they kept fighting. We just didn't take very good shots. We have to take better shots and we have to limit our turnovers. Against a good team that's going to come back to haunt you."

Weston has outscored its three opponents 36-2. Matthews knows, though, that tougher challenges await. There is a non-league game Saturday against Medfield, Mass., and league contests against Joel Barlow and New Fairfield. Staples is also on the horizon in a difficult non-league game. While the season is young, the Trojans need to tighten things up. Quickly.

"In the beginning of the season you're going to have some sloppy play,'' Mathews said. "We've been at this a few weeks now. We need to start playing better."

The good news for the Trojans is the defense looks strong again, led by goalie Alex Peyreigne (three saves) and Kip McMahon, an all-state selection last year. "Our defense is what defines us,'' Mathews said.

McMahon, Joey Falci, Eli Paige, Kyle Allon and Richard Miller also scored for Weston. The Trojans meet Stratford at home Thursday before the non-league contest against Medfield.
