Weston Girls Learn Basketball From High School Players

WESTON, Conn. – Future Weston High School girls basketball players learned from present team members during a clinic Monday.

Girls coach Dan Rosen and his team taught fundamentals on shooting, dribbling and all aspects of the game to 20 elementary and middle school girls.

“It’s great that we’re building our program for the future,’’ senior Zoe Zegers said. “I’m also a camp counselor in the summer, so it’s fun for me to work with kids. Hopefully they’ll find it’s a sport that they really enjoy.”

Rosen has been running the free clinic since he became the team’s head coach three years ago. He's hoping that by creating interest at a younger age, girls can develop the skills to stick with the sport through high school.

“I think we’re already starting to see an impact,’’ said Rosen, whose team has qualified for the state tournament in both his years as head coach. “We have some freshmen on our team that are getting a lot of playing time on the varsity level. We’re hoping to develop a group each year that can come in and contribute.”

Rosen is also coaching a seventh grade travel team in the Weston Basketball Association. The opportunities available to Weston girls now are vastly different from just a few years ago. Zegers, for instance, did not play until her freshman year at high school. Now she’s a starter on the varsity.

“I think it’s a big deal for them to get to see the high school players,’’ Zegers said. “I think they have a lot of fun. And we’re a pretty cool crew to hang out with.”
