WESTON, Conn. After winning last years Class S state championship, the Weston High School girls lacrosse team is looking to repeat. This years team is off to a 5-1 start with wins over some bigger schools. Its only loss was to Stamford on Monday.
Our perfect season is gone, so now weve got to be tough, second year coach Megan Murphy said Tuesday before the Trojans defeated Bunnell, 14-6, behind four goals from sophomore Steph Thompson.
The victory over Bunnell, which came into the game with a 2-2 record, was an easy one. The Trojans dominated in the first half, scoring the first 10 goals. The second half was a different story. The Bulldogs scored the first four goals before Weston regained its composure and cruised to victory.
We have a hard time picking it up against teams that arent strong, and we were exhausted after yesterdays game against Stamford in the hot weather, Murphy said. We need to get tougher as a group.
Senior Katie Ledwich and sophomore Lindsay Koch scored three goals each.
Our team has a lot of scorers, and no one stands out, Murphy said. One player usually carries a team, but were the opposite. And we have a lot of younger players who are just getting started.
A torn meniscus to a star player Morgan Moubayed has set the team back. But it looked strong Tuesday, especially in the first half, winning possession on draws, converting shots and playing strong defense.
Next up is Bethel on Thursday, an away game that will be a challenge. Theyre doing well so its a big test for us. And the games on grass, which is tough to adjust, Murphy said.
