WESTON, Conn. Weston High girls lacrosse coach Megan Murphy believes the team is closing the gap on the powerful Newtown High School program, but the Trojans learned Tuesday that they still have a long way to go.
After a promising start for the Trojans, Newtown erupted for six unanswered goals to end the first half en route to a 16-5 victory. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for Weston, which fell to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the South-West Conference. Newtown is 10-2 (7-0 in the conference) and has won eight straight.
I always expect us to win, Murphy said. It wasnt the result that we hoped it would be, or what we wanted it to be. But I thought we played well. Weve had a lot of injuries, and were still trying to adjust to that.
Catie Ledwick and Lindsay Koch scored two goals each for Weston, and Alexa Werner had one. Grace Mattison and Stephanie Thomson had assists.
Ledwick scored consecutive goals 49 seconds apart early in the first half to give Weston a 2-1 lead, and Koch scored with 13:52 left to put Weston up 3-2. Newtown answered quickly, scoring two goals in 27 seconds to take the lead for good. Meaghan Brophy (four goals) scored with 12:27 left to make it 4-3, and she added two more before the half was over.
Caroline Kingsley and Meredith Bridges added three each for Newtown, which scored six of the first seven goals in the second half.
I thought our defense played pretty well for the amount of time we were on our defensive end, Murphy said. When youre playing defense so much, you panic a little bit on attack because you havent had the ball all that much.
Theres still a lot of season ahead for Weston, which won the Class S championship last year. The Trojans may not be in Newtowns class yet in lacrosse, but Murphy believes the day is coming.
I truly think one day when we can do it, Murphy said. One of these days its going to happen.
