WESTON, Conn. Weston Highs girls basketball team has been hurt by long periods of futility and turnovers all season. With a chance to make the South-West Conference playoffs with a win Tuesday over rival Joel Barlow, those twin demons again conspired to derail the Trojans.
The Falcons held Weston scoreless for more than eight minutes and forced 16 turnovers en route to a 49-31 victory. Barlow (13-7, 9-6) secured the No. 7 seed for Saturdays first-round tournament game against Pomperaug. Weston (8-12, 7-8) waits for the state tournament. Even with a win, Weston may not have made the tournament. The Trojans needed help in other games, but its loss made it a moot point.
I dont think it was effort; I think its execution, Weston coach Dan Rosen said. Its disappointing to have that on a night where we had a lot to play for.
Weston took a 9-5 lead with 4:45 to play in the first quarter. But Barlow scored 16 unanswered points to take control of the game. At halftime, Barlow took a 25-16 lead after enjoying its biggest lead at 23-10 late in the quarter.
The Trojans came out with a 7-1 run to open the third quarter and had the ball trailing 26-23. They turned over the ball, and Barlow built the lead back to 35-27 entering the fourth quarter. Weston scored just four points in the fourth quarter and shot 1-for-10.
I thought we some of these things corrected, Rosen said. One of our goals was to keep turnovers to 12 or less and score 45 points, which wouldve put us right in the game. We didnt do either.
Ellie Martin worked hard to get 12 points for the Trojans, and Lianna Hursh added nine. Barlow packed its 2-3 zone tight and dared the Trojans to beat it from outside, and they could not.
We didnt do a good job of moving the ball side to side and executing our game plan, Rosen said. Its disappointing to only score 31 points and lose by that margin.
