Weston Challenged Athlete Completes Triathlon

WESTON, Conn. – David Gelfand, a 13-year-old Weston amputee who wears a prosthetic leg, completed the Stamford JCC Kids Triathlon on June 17 in a time of 41:55.

Gelfand swam 150 meters, biked 4 miles and ran 1 mile.

The event was one of many Gelfand, an eighth-grader at Weston Middle School, has participated in. “I’ve been in the San Diego Challenge five times,” he said. Gelfand participated in the swimming portion of The San Diego Triathlon Challenge last year, a 1-mile swim in La Jolla Cove, as a member of the Cups team.

The San Diego Triathlon Challenge is an event sponsored by the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which held its Foundation Gala in New York on June 8. Gelfand attended the event, which raised $1.4 million for the organization. Gelfand's travel expenses to attend the 2011 San Diego Triathlon Challenge were covered by the foundation.

Gelfand said he also swims with the Weston swim team and at Compo Beach.
