WESTON, Conn. Weston High defeated Joel Barlow for the South-West Conference championship in boys lacrosse late last month. But Wednesdays rematch in the Class S semifinals was all Falcons resoundingly.
Top-seeded Barlow outscored the fourth-seeded Trojans, 9-1, over the middle two periods en route to a 16-4 win in Wednesdays contest at Fairfield Ludlowe. The Falcons will play for the state championship Saturday at Brien McMahon in Norwalk.
Mike Mattson, Matt Billy and Thomas Samartino had three goals each for Barlow, while Nolan Stauffer had two goals and four assists.
They controlled the ground balls, they shot well, they beat us in every facet of the game, Weston coach John Mathews said.
Weston took an early 2-1 lead on a goal by Sean Fumai with 4:36 left in the first quarter. The Falcons closed out the quarter on a 3-0 run and took a 7-3 lead at halftime. The Falcons pumped home six goals in the third quarter to make it a rout.
We had a good game plan against them in the SWC game, Mathews said. But theyre a good team, and they made the adjustments.
Lyle Mitchell, Jack Scheufele and Jesse Laico also scored for Weston, while goalie Grant Limone made 15 saves. The loss ended a late season run by Weston, which won seven straight games and captured its first league championship.
The loss ended the season for Weston teams and marked a tough 26-hour span. The baseball team was eliminated from state play Tuesday, and the girls lacrosse team lost in the state playoffs earlier Wednesday. Still, it was a fine season for Mathews and his perennial state contender.
When we started the season, we had two goals: to win the league and the state, Mathews said. We got one of them, and we won our first league championship. Im happy for the kids that brought that back to Weston. Give credit to Barlow. They were the better team tonight.
