WESTON, Conn. Weston High Schools eye-opening playoff run came to an inauspicious end Tuesday with an 11-4 loss to Plainville in the semifinals of the Class M baseball tournament at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport.
The loss capped a surprising run for Weston, which took out No. 7 North Branford and No. 2 Ellington en route to the semifinals. It also beat No. 23 Suffield in its first game as the Trojans went deeper than ever into the tournament.
The 10th-seeded Trojans took a 4-1 lead after two innings, but 11th-seeded Plainville scored five in the top of the third to take the lead for good. Matt Thomas had three hits and five RBIs for Plainville, including a three-run triple to highlight the game-changing third inning.
That one inning just killed us, Weston coach Frank Fedeli said. If we played them again, it might be different. There were just a couple of plays there that went their way. It was a game of inches.
Things looked good for the Trojans early. After Plainville scored a run in the first, Weston came right back with two of its own. Jim Sanzones RBI single scored Charles Ameer, and Sanzone scored on an error. Ethan Lee-Tyson had an RBI single in the second, and Justin Resnick scored on a wild pitch.
In the third, Plainville sent 10 batters to the plate. Thomass triple was the big play, and Chris Kuzia hit a sacrifice fly and Nick Moshier lined an RBI single.
Trailing 6-4, Weston had a huge opportunity in the fourth to get back in it. The Trojans loaded the bases with one out, but Asher Lee-Tyson grounded into a double play.
Plainville broke it open with four runs in the sixth. Thomas was in the middle of the rally again with an RBI single.
Were not going to be satisfied with this, Fedeli said. Today wasnt our day, but were not going away. We have to take this and build on it.
