Eddie Hutchins and the nine other seniors on the Weston High School football team were red-hot during a cold Thanksgiving eve game at Joel Barlow High School, going out in style. Hutchins rushed for 82 yards and three touchdowns, while the defense came up with four takeaways. The Trojans pummeled rival Joel Barlow, 48-12, to keep the Aspetuck Trophy back in Weston. The victory wrapped up the first winning season for the Trojans since 2002.
"Our theme all year was just to get better every day," head coach Joe Lato said. "Barlow is tough and we're fortunate we got the turnovers we did. It was a passionate game, but that's what you expect in a rivalry matchup like this."
Weston came out focused and determined to avenge last year's Thanksgiving Day loss to Barlow. Hutchins quickly got the Trojans on the board with a 24-yard dash to the end zone. He added scores from seven and nine yards out before the first half ended. The Trojans led by just eight when the offense exploded for 13 points in less than a minute. A quarterback sneak by Joe Falci and a 32-yard interception returned for a touchdown by Tyler Hassett sent the Trojans into halftime with a commanding 34-6 lead.
The defense forced three fumbles from a sloppy Barlow offense and sacked Falcons quarterback Peter Meehan four times. Jack Crowell and Drew Clevenger starred on the defensive side of the ball for Weston.
Falci added the cherry on top with a perfect 29-yard touchdown pass to Matt Keeney, to seal the win. Hutchins' first two touchdowns were set up by 98-yards rushing by freshman running back Daniel Rogers, who left the game late in the first quarter with what appeared to be a severe knee injury. It was the only blemish on an otherwise perfect evening for the Trojans.
Weston will be crowned SWC Patriot Division champs if Bethel loses to Brookfield today.
