Westport tennis players can smack forehands, slam serves and run down balls during the town's annual Tennis Festival Day Saturday at Longshore Club Park. There will be lessons, competitions, food, raffles and prizes, all to keep players from ages 7 to 75 swinging their racquets. And it's free.
"I think a lot of people are excited about the event this year because it's the 50th anniversary of Longshore,'' said Dave Kardas, who directs the town's vast recreational programs.
One of the highlights is the 50th anniversary Mixed Doubles Tournament. It is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Mixed Doubles teams of all levels will compete in a "compass draw" winners and losers move in different directions and players can sign up at the festival.
Players can also register for the Family Classic Tennis Tournament. There are divisions for parent and child, 18-and-under, 14-and-under, 12-and-under and husband and wife. The winners advance to the regional tournament at the Yale Tennis Courts later this month. The event is associated with the Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament.
There is also a men's singles tournament for several levels. They will play in a round-robin. The Tennis Festival begins at 3 p.m., with free lessons, food, raffles, and racquet demos.
