After a thunderous 20-0 victory over Platt Tech to open the season Wednesday, the Weston High School baseball team took on a Wilton High School team that posed a much great challenge. Weston's bats fell silent thanks to a 6 1/3 inning gem by Wilton's John Legaz, as the Trojans fell 5-1.
"We faced a good pitcher today, but we're a team that can't give extra outs and not take advantage of extra outs," Weston head coach Frank Fideli said. "We're going to have to win low-scoring games."
Weston's best chance came in the fifth inning as it trailed by two runs. Legaz walked Lucas Dunn to lead off the inning, but Dunn was thrown out trying to steal second.
Legaz then walked the next two batters, leading to an RBI single by Jiay Lane. The single would have knocked in two runs instead of one if Dunn had been on base. Instead, Legaz settled down and struck out the final two batters of the inning to escape the jam.
Wilton added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach. The Trojans got two men on in the top of the seventh, but Silas Beyman shut the door on Weston in relief and collected the save.
Drew Clevinger was solid in his first varsity start for Weston but did not get the support he needed from the offense. Clevinger struck out eight in a six-inning, complete-game performance. His counterpart, Legaz, also provided the deciding blow on offense with a two-run double in the second inning.
"I'd rather have tougher games at the start of the season," Fideli said. "It gets us ready for the tough [Southwest Conference] games. Easy wins will get you into states, but I want to earn it."
Weston (1-1) will try to bounce back Saturday when it hosts Westhill High School at 2 p.m.
