Steve Young doesn't need to give back to Fairfield County. He does so, however, with gratitude. Young, the NFL Hall of Famer who grew up in Greenwich, spoke on a conference call about supporting the Chelsea Cohen Fitness Center through his foundation, Forever Young. Young left Greenwich over 20 years ago to play college football at Brigham Young and lives in California. His heart, however, remains in Fairfield County.
"There are many friends who still live there,'' Young said, explaining his involvement with Cohen Academy and the Fairfield County Sports Commission, which is creating the center. "I was shot out of a cannon, and it had to be the perfect trajectory. You want to recognize who you were coached by, like Mike Ornato and Tom Dineen and some of the other great sportsmen in town. You don't ever want to lose that. The reason I like to stay connected is the impact they had on me."
A kickoff event for the Cohen Center will be held next Thursday at Norwalk High School at 6:30 p.m. The Cohen Fitness Academy's goal is to create a facility that provides kids year-round access to the best available fitness trainers, coaches, and health and wellness programs. As part of the weekend for the Cohen Center, Calvin Murphy will visit the Carver Center in Norwalk on Friday and a benefit softball game will be played Saturday at Norwalk High.
"We hope that this is a one-stop site, a resource for the county and children,'' Young said. "Living in California, I'm just glad to have that connection."
Forever Young Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on passing on hope and resources for the development, strength, and education of children. The foundation serves children facing significant physical, emotional, and financial challenges by providing them with academic, athletic and therapeutic opportunities currently unavailable to them.
"We partner with people, and finding the right partner is important,'' Young said. "I'm grateful for what the commission has allowed me to do."
