WESTPORT, Conn. In an up and down season for the Staples High boys basketball team, Westport's Wreckers are hoping to be on the up side of things in the home stretch of the season. The Wreckers nearly blew a nine-point lead over Wilton with under four minutes to play and survived a last-second three-point attempt to hold on for a 54-51 victory.
This was a tough place to play and it was a total team win tonight, Staples head coach Colin Devine said. Were just taking it one game at a time and weve got the one win we need in front of us. Now well focus on Westhill.
Four different Wreckers finished in double-digits, with James Frusciante leading the way with a game-high 17 points. Mike Argosh (12 points) netted the back-breaking layup with under a minute to play to secure the Staples win.
Wilton started the game on an 11-4 run, but Staples roared back to tie the game at 23 by halftime and took at 39-33 lead by the end of the third quarter. The Wreckers started the fourth on an 11-2 run.
Despite nearly coughing up the big lead, Devine saw a lot of positives. I thought we had great senior leadership and poise down the stretch, he said. We had a great game from James Frusciante. We made our shots and took care of business.
Peter Rankowitz and Ross Whelan each added 10 points for Staples. Pat Kohlman netted five points.
Staples (7-6) is just one win away from clinching a state playoff berth and will travel to Westhill on Friday for a 7 p.m. game. The road will not be easy the rest of the way for the Wreckers, as the five of their last seven games are against opponents with winning records.
