The Wreckers (11-8 overall, 10-7 Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference) need a victory to secure a berth in the league playoffs. Staples currently is seeded seventh in the race for one of the eight bids.  Wilton also is 10-7 in the league, while Greenwich is 9-8.

Seniors who will be honored at Wednesday’s game include co-captains Peter Rankowitz and James Frusciante, Ross Whelan, Joe Greenwald and Alex Addessi.

After a slow start, Staples ripped off seven wins in eight games, including a dramatic 53-50 win versus Westhill Feb. 7. The Wreckers have lost two of their last three, including a 55-43 setback to Greenwich Feb. 12 and a 70-68 double overtime setback Monday to Danbury. Frusciante scored 29 against the Hatters, while Rankowitz had 20. Nick Esposito’s basket tied the game at 68 late in the second overtime, but the Hatters won when Danyjoel Harris hit a bucket just before the buzzer.

The loss to Greenwich could be crippling for Staples. If the Wreckers lose Wednesday and Greenwich wins against Danbury, the Cardinals will squeak into the playoffs by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker.

Bassick (10-9 overall, 8-9 league) has been strangely inconsistent this winter, dropping five straight in late January while also beating playoff teams Norwalk and Westhill and losing a tight contest Monday to Trinity Catholic.

Wednesday’s game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. The Senior Night ceremonies will take place beforehand.
