Saugatuck Rowing Club's Max Meyer-Bosse had a new partner but the same result Sunday at the USRowing Junior National Championships in Cincinnati. The Staples High School junior teamed with Weston's Graham Anderson to win the Men's Youth 2x, defending the title he won last year with Owen Traynor.
Saugatuck also took second and fourth in the Girls Youth 4x for its best showing ever at the national meet.
"We were kind of planning on winning it this year,'' said Saugatuck Rowing Club coach Sharon Kriz of the win by Meyer-Bosse and Anderson. "Last year was kind of a surprise. This year, knowing the speed that won it last year, I did expect it. Of course, it's nice to actually do it."
Meyer-Bosse and Anderson sped across the finish line in 6:44.284, about two seconds ahead of the runner-up. Kriz said the Saugatuck pair led from start to finish. Meyer-Bosse and Anderson have been long-time training partners, Kriz said, and instantly jelled when they were paired together. "We knew that when Owen graduated Graham would join Max,'' Kriz said.
The Women's Youth 4x of Susan Greenberg, Meldina Markovic, Lizy Youngling and Alexandra Zadravec finished second on the 2,000 meter course in 6:52.003, just over a second behind winner Long Beach Junior Crew. Saugatuck also took fourth in the race with Nicoline Lomas, Breezy Ferrara, Samantha Smolka and Kathleen Taylor. It was the first time in the history of the Junior Nationals two boats from the same club competed in the Grand Finals.
Sauagtuck sent 33 athletes to the meet, and six of the nine boats made the Grand Finals. The Men's Lightweight 4+ took fifth, the Women's Lightweight Youth 2x finished fifth and the Women's Youth 2- finished sixth.
Kriz has been the coach for four years at Saugatuck Rowing Club, which is based in Westport.
