WESTON, Conn. Weston runners take note the towns first half marathon, The Reservoir Run, is scheduled for Nov. 4, and theres still time to sign up.
The 13.1-mile course starts and ends on School Road, with a four-mile run along the Saugatuck Reservoir. The course was certified by local race director Jim Gerweck, who said it was perfectly laid out, according to Don Gary, the race co-chair and president of Weston Kiwanis Club, which is organizing the race. The Kiwanis Club plans to hold The Reservoir Run annually, Gary said.
The race will be chip timed, with water stops manned by volunteers.
The top three finishers will win prizes, including Sports Authority gift certificates, with awards given to top finishers in six age groups.
The race benefits three charities, including Purple Heart Homes, an organization that retrofits homes to provide handicap access and housing for wounded vets. Sandra Lee, an injured vet being assisted by the organization, will attend the race, Gary said.
Gatorade, the title sponsor, Fairfield County Bank, Subway and other local businesses have made contributions. Kiwanis members and other Weston groups are volunteering, including the Boy Scouts, the Weston Grange, the Historical Society and high school sports teams.
The race will be limited to 700 runners; a couple of hundred have signed up so far, Gary said. He expects 400-500 on race day.
Go to Raceit.com to register. You can also register on Nov. 3 at the Norfield Church parish, where runners will go to pick up their race numbers. The registration fee is $60, or $65 on race day.
The Reservoir Run takes place the same day as the New York Marathon, which is a great day for marathons it wont be too hot, Gary said. There are 100,000 applications for New York and only 40,000 are accepted, so were available for those with marathon fever who didnt get in.
