EASTON, Conn. The Redding-Easton softball program is trying to close the gap on powerful Darien in the District 1 tournament. But in Mondays championship game at Middlebrook School in Wilton, the three-time defending champions proved they are still the best team in the field.
Darien defeated Redding-Easton, 10-0, in five innings. It was the second time the Redding-Easton Thunder lost to Darien in the tournament. The other contest was a 12-2 decision June 23. Redding-Easton finished the tournament 3-2.
We had a lot of hard-hit balls, Thunder manager Rich Colangelo said. We just hit it right at them, and they made the plays.
Darien scratched out a run in the first and one in the second and was still up 2-0 entering the fourth. The team then put it away, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs. Two errors, three walks, a hit batsman and two passed balls contributed to the big inning. Darien had just three hits in the inning and seven for the game.
Redding-Easton had several good scoring opportunities, but left two runners on in the second and had a runner thrown out at third in the fifth after deciding not to attempt to score on a wild pitch. Caitlin Colangelo pitched well against the hard-hitting Darien lineup, and speedy center fielder Catarina Goncalves made several nice running catches. Bianca Criscuolo had the team's only hit off of hard-throwing Sophia Barbour.
We have a lot of 11-year-olds on this team, Rich Colangelo said. Well try to make it back here next year.
