Peter's Spirits Walks Off to Weston Softball Final

WESTON, Conn. -- Twice on the brink of elimination, Peter's Spirits walked off to a 9-8 victory Tuesday over Weed Whackers to clinch a spot in the Weston women's softball league finals. Peter's erased a five-run deficit to force extra innings and scored twice in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off single by Kathleen O'Connell. The hit scored Heidi Keeney Baisley and the celebration was on for Peter's Spirits.

With darkness creeping in at North House Field and her team trailing 8-7, Baisley roped a one-out single to left. Karen Constant motored home all the way from first and was safe on a very close play at the plate when the throw got away from the catcher. Baisley advanced to third on the throw, setting the stage for team captain O'Connell's heroics.

It was the second comeback of the night after Weed Whackers staked out what seemed to be a back-breaking 7-2 lead in the sixth. Peter's did not quit, bouncing back with base hits from Vicki Storey, Eileen Poulopoulos, Mary Asphar, Kelly Saltzgaber, Lauren Abrams and Baisley in its half of the 6th to cut the lead to 7-6 and put the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Peter's failed to tie the game in the sixth, but Storey plated O'Connell to knot the game at 7-7 on an RBI groundout.

The game seemed to go in Weed Whackers' favor again when they loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the ninth. But the Whackers pushed only one run across as Constant worked her way out of the jam.

The double-elimination contest continues Thursday with the Weed Whackers playing the 20-30-40 Something's. The winner of that game will challenge Peter's for the championship on Aug. 23.
