Peter's Spirits took the next big step in an amazing worst-to-first story. After failing to win a single game in the first four-and-a-half years of its existence, the team will play for the Weston women's softball league championship thanks to a come-from-behind 11-8 victory over the 20-30-40 Somethings.
"Our team is getting better every year," outfielder Val Saltzman said. "Two years ago, we had a team that couldn't hit the ball into the outfield. Now we have a team of hitters, and they have confidence."
Peter's Spirits was clinging to a 3-2 lead in the fourth when the Somethings took back the lead with RBI hits from Merritt Williams and Sue Parkinson. Kristen Smith gave the Somethings some padding with a two-run double to make it 7-3. But Peter's Spirits was not about to give up.
"We're used to playing from behind," Saltzman said. "Coming from behind is one of our fortes. Anything can happen in slow-pitch softball."
Saltzman almost singlehandedly carried the team in the comeback, ripping a two-run double in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-5, then topped it with a ground-rule triple in the sixth to plate the final two runs of the game. Julie Baisley and Tina Gaines also contributed with RBI hits.
Peter's Spirits will play for the league championship Tuesday against the winner of the Wild Things vs. 20-30-40 Somethings in the loser's bracket. That game will be played Thursday.
