Peter's Rallies to Win Softball Crown

Peter's Spirits awakened just in time to capture the Weston Women's Softball League championship Tuesday night. Trailing 5-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, Peter's erupted for seven runs to defeat the Wild Things, 7-5. The victory capped a remarkable turnaround for a team that won only two games in 2009.

"When we get momentum and confidence, we start clicking,'' said Julie Baisley, whose two-run single gave Peter's the lead. "We had a little more confidence with the bat this year."

The Wild Things needed to beat Peter's twice to capture the title. Jenn Cirino's two-run triple in the first staked them to a lead. The Wild Things added a run in the third on an RBI double by Kim Granite, and Stacy Rubenstein's RBI double and Cirino's single in the fifth made it 5-0. Pitcher Lisa Brodlie allowed four hits through five innings.

In the sixth, Peter's first two batters reached on errors before Laura Maloney singled. After Tina Gaines reached on an error, Mary Asphar, Kelly Saltzgaber and Val Saltzman singled. Baisley's single gave Peter's its first lead. Heidi Keeney delivered the final run with a groundout. "I knew they had a strong outfield, and I just wanted to get something over the infield,'' Baisley said.

Peter's finished 6-4 during the regular season before going 4-0 in the playoffs. "Our goal last year was not to get run-ruled in every game, and we won two games,'' manager Craig Saltzgaber said. "This year we have some new players, and they understand the game better."

Peter's was also awarded the inaugural Linda Filsinger Trophy for sportsmanship.

Peter's Spirits roster includes Mary Asphar, Kelly Saltzgaber, Val Saltzman, Julie Baisley, Heidi Keeney, Amy Mirchandani, Lauren Abrams, Karen Constant, Kathleen O'Connell, Eileen Poulopoulos, Laura Maloney and Tina Gaines.
