Peter's Cruises to 2nd Straight Softball Title

WESTON, Conn. – Less than 24 hours after coming within one out of their second straight championship only to fall in stunning fashion, Peter's Spirits was not going to stand for any more drama. Peter's came out swinging from the start to thump the Weed Whackers 14-6 in the winner-take-all final and win a second straight Weston Women's Softball League title.

"I think last night we had the pressure going a little bit because we wanted this," said Kathleen O'Connell, Peter's team captain. "We always do better when we have fun so we just decided we were going to have fun out there and I think that helped."

Heidi Keeney drove in four runs as Peter's Spirits pounded out 15 hits. Kelly Saltzgaber was the catalyst atop the lineup, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI. Val Saltzman also had a perfect evening at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.

When the game started, Peter's quickly got to work and never let up. After Lauren Abrams drew a bases-loaded walk to put her team on the board, Keeney walloped a base-clearing double to give Peter's an early 4-0 lead.

The Weed Whackers chipped away in the second and third inning, pulling to within one after a two-run Marci Shaffer double. That was as close as Peter's would allow their opponents to get, exploding for four more runs on five consecutive hits in the bottom of the third.

Peter's extended its lead to 11-3 in the bottom of the fifth and put the game away with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Peter's Spirits ended a long championship drought last season after many years with just one or two wins. "It was great to finally get the team up to where it is today," O'Connell said. "We've had a lot of the same solid players for a few years now so it feels great."
