New Canaan, Stamford Start Men's Playoffs

Teams from Stamford and New Canaan will compete Saturday as the Fairfield County Men's Senior Baseball League playoffs get under way. New Canaan plays the Trumbull Titans at 9 a.m. at Mead Park in New Canaan while the Stamford Phillies meet the Bridgeport Brewers.

New Canaan brings a four-game winning streak into Saturday's game, including a sweep of Westport in a doubleheader on Aug. 21. Stamford has dropped three straight.

These "play-in" games will determine the top four teams that will play for the league championship. The teams in fifth through eighth place will play in the President's Cup tournament.

Monroe (14-2) finished atop the regular season standings. The defending league champion Fairfield Mariners (13-3) finished second. They will play in the four-team tournament for the league championship along with the two winners from Saturday's games.

New Canaan finished 8-9 and Stamford went 7-8. The Westport Cardinals (7-11) will play in the President's Cup along with the Bridgeport Dodgers (7-10). They will play the losers from Saturday's game.

The league championship tournament and the President's Cup tournament begin on Sunday.

The league has had an extended break due to Hurricane Irene and the Labor Day weekend. The postponements forced the teams to schedule play-in games to determine playoff seedings. Visit the Fairfield County Men's Senior Baseball League website for more information.
