LaCava Visits Kids in New Zealand

Weston's Nick LaCava is just days from competing for the United States team in the World Rowing Championships in New Zealand. Thursday, he took time to speak to a group fourth- and fifth-grade New Zealanders who are interested in the sport.

LaCava and his lightweight four crew of Will Daly, Ryan Fox and Anthony Fahden joined lightweight single sculler Julie Nichols in talking to the students. Their school is just a few miles from Lake Karapiro, where the World Rowing Championships are set to begin Sunday.

Sitting in front of some 60 fourth and fifth grade boys and girls, who wore blue uniforms but no shoes (school tradition), the athletes answered questions about what it was like to be on the U.S. rowing team, what inspired them, what they ate and who thought was their fastest competition.

"It was great," said LaCava. "I think the kids got a lot out of it and some great answers to their questions. There might be some future rowers in the bunch. It makes me think about when I was this age. It makes you feel like you have fans."

LaCava is one of several Fairfield County rowers competing in the meet. Brian De Regt of Rowayton will row in the lightweight men's double with Jon Winter of New Haven. New Canaan's Charlie Cole and Norwalk's Dan Walsh will row on the men's eight. Andrew Johnson of Riverside will row in an adaptive event. Redding's Victoria Burke, who rowed for the Saugatuck Rowing Club, will compete in the lightweight women's quadruple sculls.
