Kids 'Tri' Their Best

More than 70 young multi-sport athletes swam, ran and rode bicycles Sunday at Staples High School to raise money for YMCA scholarships. The competitors gave it their all in the Westport Weston Family YMCA's Strong Kids Triathlon, even if they weren't too keen on all of the events.

"I liked everything except the biking," said Kevin Xiang, a 14-year-old Staples freshman who won his age division. "I've never been bike racing before and my bike is kind of small."

Madison Keith, a 12-year-old from Fairfield, came out of the pool first and also did well on the bicycle. She was expecting to run a half-mile, but had to run nearly 1 mile to finish. "I liked the bike riding and the swimming,'' Madison said. "The run was harder than I thought. It was fun. It was a good experience."

Children ages 10-15 swam 150 meters, rode their bikes for 2½ miles and ran 1 mile. Children ages 6-9 swam 75 meters, pedaled 1¼ miles and ran a half-mile. Children 6 and under ran a 100 meter dash.

Rob Reeves, CEO of the Westport Weston Family Y, was pleased with the number of participants. "It's nice to hear the parents encouraging their kids,'' Rob said. "You didn't hear too many people concerned about first place. It was all about having fun."
