EASTON, Conn. Weston High defeated Joel Barlow for the South-West Conference boys lacrosse championship late last month. But Wednesdays rematch in the Class S semifinals was all Falcons resoundingly.
Top-seeded Barlow outscored the fourth-seeded Trojans, 9-1, over the middle two periods en route to a 16-4 win in Wednesdays contest at Fairfield Ludlowe. The Falcons will play for the state championship on Saturday at Brien McMahon in Norwalk.
Mike Mattson, Matt Billy and Thomas Samartino had three goals each for Barlow, while Nolan Stauffer had two goals and four assists.
It wasnt revenge, said Barlow coach John Distler, whose team will play sixth-seeded Somers in Saturdays title game. I would have preferred that we won both of the games the SWC game and this one. But if I had to pick, I prefer this one.
Weston took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Sean Fumai with 4:36 left in the first quarter. But after that, it was all Barlow. The Falcons led 4-2 at the end of one and 7-3 at halftime. They stretched the lead to 13-3 entering the final quarter.
Mattson was a handful for Weston. Besides his three goals, he dominated the faceoffs, where Barlow won 15 of 21 draws. The speedy senior also picked up 11 ground balls.
When you get the ball after every goal its nice, Distler said. Just knowing youre going to get the ball back makes things easier.
Goalie Cooper Brown made 15 saves, while Wyatt Tompkins (two goals), Liam Rooney and Josh Turnick added goals. Pete Meehan chipped in two assists as the Falcons return to the Class S title game for the second straight year. Barlow lost, 6-5, to St. Joseph last year. Barlow lost the 2007 title to game to Weston and won the state title in 2002.
