EASTON, Conn. Joel Barlow Highs girls basketball team may have made the South-West Conference tournament even with a loss Tuesday night. But to erase any doubt, the Falcons went out and ended Westons own South-West Conference playoff aspirations with a 49-31 victory in Weston.
This means a lot for these girls, coach Joe Carollo said, especially the seniors, who made it two years in a row. Everybody wants play in meaningful games. The girls said we want to win and play Saturday night. They wanted to come out and attack Weston.
The Falcons (13-7, 9-6) took control early. Trailing 9-5 with 4:45 left in the first quarter, they went on a 16-0 run as the Trojans went scoreless for 8:58. Barlow led 25-16 at halftime, and the Trojans (8-12, 7-8) got within 26-23 early in the second half. Barlow clamped down again and led 35-27 after three quarters. It held Weston to just one field goal and four points in the fourth.
We tried to pack it in and make them beat us from outside, Carollo said. We felt we had an advantage inside with our height and rebounding.
Brittany Dumas scored 13 points to lead Barlow, and Drew Bartro had 11. Taylor Auer scored all 10 of her points in the fourth quarter. Bartro added nine blocks and eight rebounds, and Dumas had eight rebounds. Victoria Shea had eight points and five assists.
Barlow will meet No. 2 seed Pomperaug in the first round of the conference tournament Saturday at 7 p.m. at Pomperaug in Southbury.
