EASTON, Conn. Every team wants to win its homecoming game. But Joel Barlow High Schools football team did not want to leave the game in doubt. The Falcons dominated on both sides of the ball in their 48-12 homecoming victory over Immaculate High School of Danbury on Saturday.
The kids came out and played hard, said Barlow head coach Rob Tynan. It was nice for the seniors, in their homecoming, to have a special day.
Immaculate struck first, turning Barlows failed onside kick to start the game into a 52-yard touchdown drive. Mustangs quarterback Patrick Fahey capped it off with a 1-yard touchdown run, putting Immaculate up 6-0 just 5:22 into the game.
But Barlow needed just two-and-a-half minutes to answer back. The Falcons finished their own 65-yard drive with a 9-yard run by junior quarterback Cooper Brown. Barlow took the lead on its next drive on a 7-yard run by Steven Miller, and the game was never in doubt after that.
The Falcons are using Brown and sophomore Jack Shaban at quarterback, as Tynan continues to search for his regular starter. Both scored two touchdowns on the ground. Senior running back Samuel Reed also added a rushing touchdown in the third quarter.
Weve always said its one and 1A, Tynan said of his quarterback duo. Were going to keep rotating series here and there and get a feel for it.
Barlows defense was just as strong Saturday. After the opening drive, the Mustangs would not score again until late in the fourth quarter, when Fahey connected with Shelden Irving on a 33-yard touchdown pass with 2:40 left in the game. The Falcons forced four turnovers, including a forced fumble by senior Jackson Sennett and an interception by senior James Burger.
With the win, Barlow improved its record to 2-3. Its next matchup is Friday night, when it will host Bethel (3-2).
