Holiday Tourneys Hold Bright Spots for Weston

WESTON, Conn. – Weston’s boys and girls basketball teams each won one and lost one  during the holiday break, but there were encouraging signs for both as they head into the new year.

The boys are 4-1 under first-year coach Mike Hvizdo, with their only loss to unbeaten Ridgefield in the finals of a tournament last week in Ridgefield. The Trojans defeated Staples, 57-56, in the first round of the tournament as senior guard Max Molinsky scored 23 points. He leads the team in scoring with 16.2 points per game and is also averaging 6.8 assists per game, fourth-best in the state. Lyle Mitchell is averaging 12.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game for Weston.

Weston returns to South-West Conference play Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Oxford.

The girls team (1-4) picked up its first win of the season, 57-53, over Wilton behind 23 points from Ellie Martin. Coach Dan Rosen’s charges followed up with a 45-41 loss to unbeaten Granby, which improved to 7-0. With a difficult opening stretch against quality opponents now over, the Trojans look to get back on the winning track Tuesday at Oxford.
