LoGuercio correctly picked all four participants in the Frozen Four the final two rounds of the NCAA men’s hockey tournament. The tournament ended with Yale’s win over Quinnipiac in the all-Connecticut final on April 13. For his prediction skills he won a $500 NCAA Shop gift card from the contest’s sponsor, Northwestern Mutual.
"When I saw that Northwestern Mutual had created the men's ice hockey bracket contest, all I could think was, 'It's about time,'" LoGuercio said in a press release. "I'm very passionate about hockey so it was natural for me to participate, and I couldn't be more thrilled to have won."
LoGuercio might have had an inside track in picking the winners. A hockey fan since age 6, LoGuercio coached the New York University hockey team from 1987 to 1991. He was also an instruction in the Hockey in Harlem program to encourage the sport’s growth in the inner city, and now coaches his own son’s teams in Connecticut.
When asked what he plans to do with his prize, LoGuercio said, “Well, for starters, my son has already picked out a new jersey.”
Northwestern Mutual also has plans to roll out March Madness-style brackets for other NCAA sports outside of basketball. The company will have similar contests for the College World Series in June and the women’s soccer tournament next fall.
